Specialist crane installed as construction progresses on replacement Energy Recovery Facility

8 Aug 2024

In early August, a specialist heavy lifting crane completed installation at Edmonton EcoPark as part of ongoing construction works on the replacement Energy Recovery Facility, with a second crane due to be installed in early 2025.

The two cranes will support the next phase of construction on the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) for mechanical works, including installation of boilers and erection of the steel frame of the facility.

ACCIONA, the lead contractor to build the replacement facility, has made significant progress since starting construction in 2022. Civil works, which include piling, excavation of the waste bunker, concrete platforms and tipping hall structure, are now largely complete with mechanical works to follow.

The next phase of works will require a specialist workforce and ACCIONA are actively seeking companies who can work with them and support roles for Riggers, Mechanical Fitters, Platers, Preservation Operatives, Pipefitters, Welders, Painters, Steel Erectors, Slingers/Banksmen, and Slud Welders.

To date NLHPP has a strong track record of social value and environmental sustainability winning the MJ Award for Innovation in June 2024 & two Brownfield Awards for sustainability in 2023.

Opportunities for local businesses have been prioritised with commitments for 10% local expenditure during construction on the project. ACCIONA has committed to delivering local benefits from its works with over £3 million worth of concrete being supplied by a local Haringey depot.

The Energy Recovery Facility is part of the NLHPP, being commissioned by the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) and will replace the existing energy from waste facility to ensure residual household waste can continue to be managed in a sustainable way.

Once complete, the Energy Recovery Facility will generate electricity for up to 127,000 homes and support heating and hot water for up to 60,000 homes through a district heat network.
