Energy Recovery Facility Contractor Receives National Site Award for Considerate Construction Standards
North London Waste Authority (NLWA) joins ACCIONA in celebrating national recognition for the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) site at Edmonton EcoPark, which was awarded a 2026 Bronze National Site Award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). The ERF, which is being delivered by ACCIONA, is the final major element of NLWA’s North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) and will replace the existing energy‑from‑waste plant at Edmonton EcoPark.
Registered as an Ultra Site, the project is among the UK’s largest and most scrutinised construction sites. The Bronze award further recognises the project for its high performance against CCS’s Code of Considerate Practice for community consideration, environmental care and workforce wellbeing. The ERF was automatically nominated for the award based solely on the results of independent CCS monitoring visits over the past three years.
Across this period, the site achieved the maximum score of 45/45, placing it in the “consistently excellent” category and well above the current industry average of 41.28. This performance places the project within the top 30% of construction sites in the UK assessed by the Scheme. Scores can increase to 50, with up to five additional points awarded for innovation and incentive initiatives. The team is targeting this enhanced score for 2026.
Javier Cejudo, Acting Programme Director of NLHPP, said: “This award reflects the consistently high standards being delivered on site and the care being taken to manage construction responsibly in a busy operational location. The Energy Recovery Facility is vital infrastructure for north London, and it is encouraging to receive independent recognition for the way the project site is being managed.”
The CCS is a non‑profit organisation dedicated to raising standards across the construction industry. It encourages organisations to consider their impact on local communities, the environment and the wellbeing of their workforce, and the National Site Awards represent one of the Scheme’s most established and respected forms of recognition.
Since enrolling in the Scheme, the project team has continually demonstrated these values in practice. In 2024, the site achieved an outstanding 98% score in a CCS in‑depth audit, with inspectors describing the site as “well organised, extremely clean and tidy” and commending the project’s social value work for “excellent community engagement”. In 2025, the team went further still, securing a 100% score across all three CCS assessment categories: Respect the Community, Care for the Environment, and Value their Workforce.
Patrick Burke, ERF Project Health & Safety Manager for ACCIONA, said: “Being recognised through audit performance alone demonstrates the everyday behaviours and culture we’ve worked hard to establish on site. The team has placed real emphasis on safety, wellbeing, environmental responsibility and community engagement, and this award is a credit to everyone involved.”
Once operational, the new ERF will play a key role in providing a long‑term, sustainable waste management solution for more than two million north London residents.
The project team formally received the National Site Award at the CCS awards ceremony on 29 April.
