North London Heat and Power Project Progress Update – January 2026
Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) Construction
The ERF site remains very active, with visible progress being made each day. While the project is behind its original schedule, key construction milestones have been achieved. The exterior concrete and steel elements of the facility are largely complete, allowing the team to focus on installing the core equipment that will power the plant.
Highly specialised machinery required to process waste and clean emissions has already been manufactured and is ready for installation, namely the boilers, the flue gas treatment, the steam turbine generator and the waste handling cranes. Several major structural elements are now in place and installation of equipment has begun across the site, marking another significant step forward.
North London Waste Authority (NLWA) continues to work closely with the ERF contractor on a recovery plan for the programme. The ERF remains the best environmental and financial solution for disposing the bin-bag rubbish of more than two million residents, and NLWA is committed to ensuring this nationally significant infrastructure project is delivered for north London.

Social Value Achievements
The NLHPP continues to deliver on its social value commitments. In collaboration with the ERF contractor, ACCIONA, NLWA’s social value team recently hosted its first SHE Can Construct workshop—an initiative aimed at inspiring more women to consider careers in construction. Delivered in partnership with Haringey-based charity Sister System, the session supported young women with experience of the care system. Participants heard directly from women working in a range of roles across the industry, including security, technical office management, and social value delivery, offering real insight into the opportunities available.
