Empowering local talent through the North London Heat and Power Project

22 May 2025

North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) is North London Waste Authority's (NLWA) ambitious plan to transform the Edmonton EcoPark into a state-of-the-art, sustainable waste hub for north London. But beyond infrastructure, NLHPP is also building brighter futures—by investing in local people.

Through strong partnerships and a commitment to social value, NLHPP is creating real opportunities for residents. These include apprenticeships, training placements, jobs, and support for local businesses.

One standout example is the project’s collaboration with local training initiatives like the Construction Skills Bootcamp in Enfield. So far, 236 residents have taken part in short-term training placements, gaining hands-on experience and skills to launch long-term careers.

Enfield resident Iulia is one such success story. She recently completed a two-week placement with NLHPP’s security provider, Iron Hill, where she thrived in the world of construction site security. With support from the Enfield Bootcamp, she received tailored training and direct exposure to the industry.

“I loved the variety,” Iulia shared. “Doing hourly patrols kept things interesting and sharpened my observation skills. There was always something new to notice.”

Beyond technical skills like health and safety, visitor management, and compliance, Iulia valued the human side of the experience—connecting with colleagues, building a professional network, and seeing the scale of a live construction project up close.

This experience has given me the confidence I needed,” she said. “I’ve learned so much, and everyone has been so supportive.” Iulia will continue to receive mentoring, including interview coaching and job-readiness support, as she takes the next step in her career.

NLHPP is also delivering at least 100 high-quality apprenticeships throughout the project's construction. So far, 48 apprenticeships have been completed in fields ranging from engineering and quantity surveying to business management and sustainability.
