North London Heat and Power Project to hit next major milestone this summer

24 Jun 2021

The first half of 2021 has seen major progress take place to deliver essential waste management and recycling facilities at Edmonton EcoPark.

Construction at EcoPark South to build the new Resource Recovery Facility (RRF), public Reuse and Recycling Centre (RRC) and new visitor and education centre known as EcoPark House began in January. All excavation and piling works are now complete, and the reinforced concrete foundation works are progressing well. Next month the project will reach another major milestone with the structural steelworks commencing, and the RRF beginning to take shape.

Highly complex engineering works to divert two Thames Water sewers – the Chingford and Angel – are moving into the final stages before completion is expected in September. Diverting the sewers represents a £5.7m investment to upgrade the existing system which serves 2 million north Londoners.

Works to clear the northern area of the EcoPark to make way for the replacement Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) are moving at pace. Clearance of the first zone is now complete and contractor DSM Demolition are preparing to start works on the remaining zones. Clearing the northern area in phases is enabling LondonEnergy’s normal operations to continue, whilst preparing the site for the ERF.

Throughout 2021, the procurement process to find a contractor to build the replacement ERF has been taking place with the anticipation to publish a contract notice award at the end of the year.

This month’s video recognises International Women in Engineering Day (IWED) which was celebrated on Wednesday 23 June. IWED is an international awareness campaign which raises the profile of women in engineering and highlights the opportunities available to women and girls in the industry. All our speakers in this month’s video are female, highlighting the fantastic work women are doing on the NLHPP. You can watch our previous construction update videos here.
