North London Heat and Power Project Progress Update – February 2025

5 Feb 2025

Energy Recovery Facility

Construction on the replacement Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Edmonton EcoPark began in early 2022 and is progressing, with a good level of productivity on site. The substantial first phase of the civil construction works is nearing completion with the project’s main contractor, ACCIONA. The workforce carrying out the activities covered by the National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry (NAECI) is currently delivering the structural steelwork for the boiler, flue gas treatment area and access platforms.

Project sub-contractors Billingtons Structures Ltd and Wright Engineering are installing the steel frame for the flue gas treatment (FGT) system, which will house the advanced technologies to capture and clean emissions from the facility.

EcoPark House

EcoPark House is an education and visitors’ centre where people can learn about recycling resources, heat, power, and how to reduce the carbon impact of their waste.

EcoPark House completed substantial construction in late 2024 and was handed over to LondonEnergy, who manage the facility. Following a period of testing and preparing the space for public use, the facility welcomed its first invited visitors for educational sessions and tours in December 2024.

Work is ongoing with educational groups to develop the resources for teaching about circular economy principles and the importance of the EcoPark in London’s waste and resource management.

Recycling Facilities

The Edmonton EcoPark Reuse and Recycling Centre opened to the public in July 2024. It is the first major public facility delivered as part of the North London Heat and Power Project and allows north London residents to bring their recycling directly to the EcoPark for the first time.

Since opening, visitors to the reuse and recycling centre have steadily increased with overwhelmingly positive feedback from users who appreciate the ease of access and friendly staff.

For more about what can be brought to the centre and how to get there, visit the Edmonton EcoPark Reuse and Recycling Centre webpage.

The centre, along with a new resource recovery facility, represent over £150 million in investment in north London to secure new recycling facilities for local authorities.
