Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) Construction
The Energy Recovery Facility site continues to make strong progress, with key milestones achieved since January 2026. Construction of the facility is now 59% complete, and 70% of the specialist equipment required to power the plant has been manufactured and is ready for installation.
Several major structures are now in place, including the tipping hall and waste bunker, while construction of the two boilers is underway. At the same time, work is progressing on the Flue Gas Treatment (FGT) plant, with silos now installed to store materials used in the emissions cleaning process.
A key milestone was achieved this month with the arrival of the 160-tonne turbine and 125-tonne generator to site. Together, they will convert steam produced by the facility into electricity, helping recover valuable energy from non-recyclable waste and supplying power to homes and businesses.
The ERF will replace the existing Energy from Waste plant on the Edmonton site, which is 56 years old and operating far beyond its expected life. The ERF represents the best environmental and financial solution for disposing the bin-bag waste of more than two million residents.
Biodiversity at the EcoPark
A new environmental video is available which highlights how biodiversity has been a key focus throughout NLHPP, with measures in place to protect local wildlife and nearby water environments. On the ERF site, it showcases how construction is carefully managed to minimise impacts and safeguard important habitats. It also features a range of enhancements across the EcoPark designed to support nature, including wildlife habitats and sustainable building features.
