Does future modelling consider population increases in north London?
Yes. The modelling takes future population projections into full account.
The population in north London is expected to be 10% to 45% higher by 2050. A higher proportion of the population will be of an economically active age, a group with higher consumption rates. Also, growth of households is expected to be mainly in flats and apartments, which have lower recycling rates than houses.
Our forecast waste model shows increased capacity is needed for the replacement facility, even if we reach our ambitious 50% recycling targets. Due to these factors outside of our control, we must future proof the facility to deal with 700,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year. These projections are regularly assessed and updated by North London Waste Authority.
Further information about why we need to keep this facility in north London is detailed in the Needs Assessment.
